A SAD story from down under
Article Abstract:
British stock prices tend to perform well in Jan of each year, and the same is true for the US. The weather could affect investment patterns, and price falls are often associated with lack of sunshine in the US. The pattern in Australia is different, with May and July good months, rather than January. This could be explained by winter being a good time for investments. Irrational pessimism linked to the weather could be the reason for stocks performing well in certain months.

High-tech stocks maintain their momentum
Article Abstract:
Interest rates look set to rise in 2000, except for Japanese rates, but this may not affect technology stocks. British technology stocks have seen prices rises which should persist if US prices support them. Banks and pharmaceuticals could be aided by merger activity. Most traditional industries have overcapacity and problems in setting prices, and the high ratings for technology stocks should be seen in this context of difficulties in finding alternatives.

Time to ditch talk of value
Article Abstract:
It is not easy to value stocks, since stocks that appear to be overvalued can continue to rise in price, as has been shown by the boom in US stock prices. One model focuses on the constant growth dividend discount, and uses inputs such as risk-free rates about which there is some debate. There is also debate around the equity risk premium and dividend growth, which are important for this model. Fair value can be affected by small changes in assumptions so valuations may not be much help in assessing markets.
