Article Abstract:

Accountants, Brian Hesje and Paul Martens run Fountain Tire Ltd which dominates the tire retail market in rural Alberta, Canada. Hesje was appointed a partner in 1984 and recruited Martens as financial manager and partner in 1986. Since then, they have reorganised the company, simplified its product range and turned it round. The company is 51% owned by the two accountants with VP, Leroy Hawtin, a tire industry veteran and 49% owned by Goodyear, its sole supplier. It works on the basis of allowing managers of individual retail outlets much freedom while providing centralised training and support. Its marketing campaigns have won awards and the company plans to expand into British Columbia.

Hans Walter Kosterlitz (1903-1996)

Article Abstract:

Hans Kosterlitz, a German scientist who made significant contributions to UK pharmacological and physiological science, died on Oct. 26, 1996 in Aberdeen, Scotland at the age of 93. His major achievements include his isolation of galactose-1-phosphate, a lactose intermediary metabolite and his discovery of the guinea-pig ileum as simple model on which the opiate action may be studied. Kosterlitz, together with John Hughes, also proved the existence and functions of brain receptors.
