Merger on the grapevine
Article Abstract:
Thresher, owned by Whitbread, and Victoria Wines, owned by Allied Domecq, may be merged if negotiations come to fruition. The two owners will reportedly merge the companies into a JV owned 50:50. The chains each have some 1,500 stores with some 9,500 employees. Supermarkets have increased their stake in the UK retail liquor market, and this has led to pressure on liquor stores. The merger is unlikely to affect smaller, specialist retailers. The new company will be able to cut costs, but will need to find a niche in order to safeguard its future.
