How the mighty can fall
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom banks have been known to fail, though people tend to trust banks without thinking. Impudent lending can lead to non-performing locans, and the bank's survival may depend on how much capital is reserved for lending risks. A secondary banking crisis in 1974 illustrates the problems that can occur. Banks have not been affected by a ballooning real estate market, and their foreign exposure is not great. Bad debts are likely to increase in a recession, but the banks have apparently safe capital adequacy.

RBS raises the ante in bid for NatWest
Article Abstract:
Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Bank of Scotland have both made bids for NatWest, and the RBS bid looks more likely to succeed, though its stock price has dropped. The changes that would result from this acquisition could lead to large scale jobs losses in the banking industry, which could in turn trigger government intervention. The management of NatWest has rejected both bids, though is thought to favor the RBS bid of the two. RBS is supported by Banco Santander, which holds a 9.6% stake in RBS.
