The authors discuss techniques useful in estate planning particularly for clients with 5 to 50 million net worth who may benefit from the use of vehicles such as irrevocable trusts which own life insurance for the purpose of estate tax exclusion. A technique for presenting planning information to clients is the focus of the discussion.

The authors discuss the estate planning uses of private split dollar life insurance in light of two favorable IRS letter rulings concerning gift and estate tax issues. Estate planners should investigate clients' economic situations and that of their beneficiaries before recommending the use of this method of funding life insurance.
