This article evaluates the memorandum of understanding between the United States National Institues of Health and the WiCell Research Institute in regard to five established embryonic stem cell lines. Although governmet researchers have access to all five ES cell lines for a nominla processing fee, there is fear that restrictions in the agreement will tie the hands of NIH scintists wishing to develop cell-based therapies and diagnostics.

Genetech's anticancer Mab expected by November

San Francisco, CA-based Genentech may have two products ready to be marketed by November 1998, a humanized monoclonal antibody, Herceptin, that targets the HER2/neu receptor, and a HER2 duagnostic kit for breast cancer. Herceptin with or without chemotherapy can be an effective treatment for aggressive metastatic breast cancer.
