In Concert: BT stakes $24 bn on US growth
Article Abstract:
British Telecommunications (BT) is seeking to acquire MCI Communications in a move that would change the nature of BT and draw it into the competitive US market. BT has a strong balance sheet and should easily be able to fund the acquisition, though in the longer term telecommunications involves high levels of investment which increases the need for capital. BT also plans investments in mainland Europe with the liberalization of the telecommunications market. There are regulatory hurdles which have to be faced and the bid could take some time to complete.

With all my worldly goods I thee endow (less 30%)
Article Abstract:
A planned merger between British Telecommunications (BT) and MCI faces problems after an MCI profit warning in Jul 1997. BT could cancel or seek to renegotiate the merger, which could result in legal action by MCI. Analysts see cancellation as involving a loss of face. Cancellation followed by a bid for MCI or a link with another partner could involve legal action against BT. BT cannot simply do nothing, due to investor pressure. Renegotiation could be carried out on the grounds that the price has become too high.

Oftel out to beat BT
Article Abstract:
Telecommunications regulator Oftel has taken steps to encourage competition in the UK telephone market from foreign companies such as Sprint and AT and T. This will affect the market share of British Telecommunications (BT). Oftel also aims to increase it power to regulate BT. Once competition has reached a prescribed level, BT will not be subject to restrictions on prices and on using its network for broadcasting. BT controls 97% of the UK market for phone calls.
