Individual differences and the effects of an information aid in performance of a fault diagnosis task
Article Abstract:
Performance of individuals in detecting and solving faults in unknown systems depends on their knowledge of the system. A high correlation between the number of problems correctly solved and system knowledge available by engineers of the Royal Netherlands Navy who were given unfamiliar fault problems to solve was observed. A simple help facility compensating for the lack of system knowledge improves problem solving. The results of the study prove that training in diagnostic procedures is more effective than theoretical instruction.

Analysing operators' diagnostic reasoning during multiple events
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the difficulties in diagnostic reasoning that operations personnel experience when faced with multiple fault scenarios. A process tracing approach was designed and used to evaluate the problem-solving episodes reported by senior operations personnel on a high-fidelity simulator. Results reveal difficulties encountered in hypothesis generation which may vary depending on training and the experience of operators and the development of their habit structures.

Methodological considerations in analysing anaesthetists' habits of action in clinical situations
Article Abstract:
The activity of expert anaesthetists in clinical settings was studied to determine the characteristics of their habits of action. Two distinct habits of action were identified and the interpretative habit of action was distinguished by extensive use of situational information. The reactive habit of action was distinguished by regulation of the process by way of predetermined conventional ranges of measured patient parameters.
