Integrated software: is there a better way?
Article Abstract:
Integrated accounting software packages have these traits: data compatibility among applications, concurrent accessibility of applications, and command consistency across applications. Software developers have attempted to use each of these criteria, separately, as a motif for creating multifunctional packages. Typical integrated packages consist of word processing, spread sheets, data management, and graphics and communications packages such as Symphony and Framework. These products are complicated and difficult to learn for the average user, or are usually strong in only one application, such as spread sheets. Microsoft's new Windows is highly lauded in the industry, but will not fulfill its promise until its DOS system is upgraded to handle memory greater than 640Kb. Some feel that using simpler systems such as Lotus 1-2-3 with upgrades is easier than using some integrated systems.

The integrated business environment: from nightmare to dream?
Article Abstract:
Fourth generation accounting systems enable companies to run a business from a single database based on relational technology in which all information from different sources and different forms is accessible within a single, integrated system. Relational technology makes a completely integrated business environment possible in which the business is seen as a data structure which relates departmental interaction to information inputs and outputs. The benefits of relational technology for inventory control, warehousing, and financial information include higher productivity; increased efficiency in systems development; increased system reliability; and improved accessibility of data.

Software support for executive role-change
Article Abstract:
Fourth generation computer languages can simplify accounting and give the financial managers information they need in order to be more effective. Fourth generation languages are specification languages rather than programming languages so all the developer has to do is tell the system what it is supposed to do, not how it is supposed to do it. The technique greatly reduces development time and increases reliability. The fourth generation systems are more flexible than older systems in the way they store and retrieve data, as well as being easier to use.
