International bond markets
Article Abstract:
The international bonds market still posted gains in 1997 despite the economic turmoil in South East Asia during the latter half of the year. The gains of the first three quarters of 1997 was enough to offset the effect of the Asian economic crisis that pulled down the market in the last quarter of 1997. International bond issues posted a record high of $831.6 billion with international straight bonds amounting to $545.5 billion.

International equities
Article Abstract:
International equity placement activity was strong from Jan 1997 through Sep 1997, particularly in 2nd and 3rd qtr. 1997. International equity placements from 1st-3rd qtr 1997 increased 36% to $53.6 billion from the same period in 1996. Low interest rates, sufficient liquidity and the search by investors for better-yielding investments contributed to the strong performance of primary and secondary international equity offerings.
