International syndicated loan market activity continued to be robust from Jan 1997 through Sep 1997. The volume of international syndicated loans increased 13.2% to $289 billion in comparison to figures for the same period in 1996. New voluntary lending amounted to about $256.4 billion assuming identified refinancing was taken into account. Non-Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries raised $43.7 billion from this sector during the period.

The volume of new syndicated credits reached an all-time high of $368.4 billion in 1995, a significant increase over 1994 figures which was pegged at $236.2 billion. Syndicated loans also surpassed straight bonds as the most dominant financial instrument in the international financial markets in 1995. In addition, re-financing rose by 85% to $99.7 billion in 1995. This figure accounts for 27% of all credits arranged within that year.

The market for international syndicated credits in the first three qtrs. of 1996 maintained its high level as compared to the corresponding qtrs. in 1995. The volume of total recorded international loans and arrangements of syndicated credits were retained. However, identified refinancing declined by $21.7 billion. The most important borrowers came from Indonesia, Korea, the Republic of South Africa and the US.
