Unit trusts on offer to UK investors have become more specialist and funds can be divded into 22 types. Broad UK trusts account for some half funds being managed, and include growth funds, equity income funds and general funds. International trusts may specialise in geographical areas. There are also trusts specialising in industrial sectors, and trusts which are involved in the money market. Trusts have been set up dealing in government securities from the UK and abroad.

Hi-tech funds hyped

Investors in mutual funds specialising in hi-tech stocks at the start of the 1980s gained poor returns. This type of investment is again on offer in 1995, and investors may be wary of buying when the market is at its peak. Technology stocks have seen sharp rises in 1995, but shares have been affected by instability in Sep 1995. Managers of the new funds ar optimistic that they will perform well, but many analysts argue that investors shoulld be wary.
