Investment trusts that must try harder
Article Abstract:
Investors should not be concerned about short periods of poor performance for investment trusts, but long periods of underperformance are cause for concern. When a trust manager is changed this can affect short term performance due to costs incurred from changing investments. Longer term performance may be improved by changing managers. High gearing can create problems as can ambitious targets for dividends. Underlying investments may involve risk and this applies to single country funds.

New false hopes for equities
Article Abstract:
The traditional link between share prices and the US dollar appears to have broken down, giving equity investors new reason for optimism. Equity investors can expect further gains and equities will also be protected from the US's rising current account deficit. However the negative correlation may not last, as a further cut in European interest rates may boost share prices, but strengthen the dollar against the euro.

Better than bonds: don't underestimate the building society as a current home for your savings
Article Abstract:
Corporate bonds Peps are promoted as being lower risk investments offering tax free incomes. However equity based Peps are expected to continue to outperform over the longer term. Other lower risk options include opening accounts with building societies in the hope of windfalls. 3,000 pounds sterling is required to open bonus-qualifying accounts with the 14 major remaining societies.
