Investors in for a nasty dose of Asian flu
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom fund managers specialising in southeast Asia have been hit by the economic problems of the region. The region's stock markets tend to be dominated by telecoms concerns, and financial and real estate enterprises. Manufacturing companies tend to be multinationals or small local companies not quoted on the stock market. Overcapacity and import penetration are becoming problems, and Hong Kong, which has been relatively insulated from the crisis, is vulnerable because of the weight of real estate.

Bear funds to soothe investors' sore heads
Article Abstract:
Bear funds are a way for investors to benefit from stock price falls. They invest partly in futures, contracts to sell stocks at a set price on a certain date, options, to allow stocks to be bought at a set price on a given date, giving cover in case of large price rises, and building society accounts providing high interest rates. Bear funds have tended not to perform well because stock prices have risen rather than fallen. They are risky investments and are suited to short-term speculation.

Everyone's a winner - except investors
Article Abstract:
Fund managers are given a variety of awards which marketing managers like to use in advertising. These awards do not guarantee that investors will buy a quality fund. Micropal is one awards organiser in the UK, and awarded 469 prizes in 1996, over a range of categories with 3dr and 2nd prizes as well as 1st. Initial charges are not included in assesments for awards. Past strong performance may not be following by continued strong performance.
