Japan
Article Abstract:
Several concerns are evident in the Japanese financial market. These include weak growth and increasing yen exchange rates, close to zero growth in the key monetary indicator and non-performing bank loans. To cope with these conditions, measures such as a government fiscal stimulus package of 13.2 trillion yen have been made available. On the other hand, strong activity in the domestic primary bond-market is expected due to the inavailability of alternative funding sources. The Nissei index was reported to increase by more than 21% in the first five months of 1993.

United States
Article Abstract:
A concern for the possible revival of inflation emerged in the US financial markets. The core consumer index rose by 4.1% against 3.1% over the 2nd half of 1992, resulting in low money market and interest rates. Long-term rates declined by a full percentage point since Nov 1992. Nevertheless, low interest rates led to an increase in bond issues on the US market. Capital rules for over-the-counter markets have also influenced market trends because they impose prohibitive costs on dealings using derivative instruments.

Germany
Article Abstract:
It is predicted that real GDP values for Germany may fall by as much as 1.9% in 1993, although rampant inflation has been halted. The latest figures for the consumer price index show a drop from the 4% recorded in the first months of 1993. Likewise, the Bundesbank's key indicator for monetary expansion fell temporarily below the 4.5 to 6.5 range set for 1993. This was caused by foreign exchange turmoils of Sep 1992. The poor outlook for public finances resulted in a halt to downslide in bond yields.
