Japanese capital flows: that wall of money again
Article Abstract:
Japanese investment in foreign equities totaled 5.6 billion pounds sterling from Apr to Jun 1996. This is the second highest level ever recorded, and the trend could continue due to changes affecting Japanese pension funds. Up to 50% of these funds can be managed by investment advisory companies since April 1996. Advisors are less restricted on the proportion of funds they can invest overseas. Japanese investment abroad was boosted by the strong performance of international markets in 2nd qtr 1996, and a change in the international equity scene could affect levels of Japanese investment abroad.

Some myths about US mutual funds
Article Abstract:
There is a myth that US baby boomers are pushing up stock prices by investing in mutual funds to save for retirement. Meanwhile the savings ratio for the personal sector has dropped, so mutual funds are not attracting new saving, rather money is coming from equities. There is a weaker link between stock prices and investment in mutual funds than may be supposed. Rising stock prices could cause increases in investment in mutual funds, rather than the reverse. This means that mutual funds are not likely to destabilize stock prices if a downturn occurs.

There is greater political stability in East Asia than in Latin America, though Asian markets may also be volatile, according to David Aaron Partnership's Andrew Jones. Schroders Korea-Europe investment trust is the Asian fund from the United Kingdom that has shown the best performance. Manufacturing and technology may be the sectors that benefit most from a revival of growth in Asia.
