Analysis of food away from home expenditures by meal occasion
Article Abstract:
The relationship between home income and habits of buying food away from home (FAFH) is quantified by meal occasion for the benefit of FAFH establishments. Fast-food chains dominate the market for breakfast and lunch but lag in dinner sales while the reverse holds true for restaurants. The study reveals that small white households without children with a higher number of earners spend more on breakfast while white better-educated higher income households without children spend more on dinner. Large minority households headed by an undereducated individual spend more on lunch.

Determinants of food away from home consumption: an update
Article Abstract:
A demographic and socioeconomic profile of individuals who consume food away from home (FAFH) is presented. Logit analysis is used to evaluate data on the individual intake portion of the 1987-1988 National Food Consumption Survey. The study shows that race, ethnicity, employment status, food stamp participation, seasonality, household size, age, income and time of week of consumption all influence the decision to eat FAFH.
