Johnston Press: making newspapers pay
Article Abstract:
Johnston Press PLC Chmn Fred Johnston, Managing Dir Ian Bell, and Finance Dir Marco Chiappelli head a holding company with 22 subsidiaries in the UK and Australia. The management team of Johnston, Bell, and Chiappelli has been together 16 years. The board of the Scottish firm decided in 1976 to diversify geographically, and the firm has made many cross-border acquisitions. The acquisition of the publishing company Dunn and Wilson gave Johnston Press Dunn and Wilson's Australian subsidiary, which had an 80% share of the Australian library book market. After taking over Dunn and Wilson, the CEO and family directors were eliminated, and 600,000 pounds sterling in savings were obtained. The firm's status as a PLC gives the management team flexibility in that they are able to issue commercial paper to finance a deal. The committee of three makes all decisions, which makes the decision-making process rapid.
