Article Abstract:
Morgan Grenfell Development Capital Chief Exec Robert Smith's career in the venture capital business of the UK spans 23 years. At the age of 28, he became the youngest local director of ICFC in Brighton. In 1982, a 38-year old Smith was subsequently appointed as general manager for corporate finance of the Royal Bank of Scotland. Despite Royal's acquisition of Charterhouse Bank without his prior consultation, Smith stayed on as head of development capital at Charterhouse where he was responsible for generating more than five billion pounds sterling in buyouts. Smith's career at Morgan Grenfell Development Capital began in 1989. As divisional head and member of the management committee, Smith is set to apply his expertise in development capital to the task of building the organization.

Barclays de Zoete Wedd Asset Management Chmn and Chief Exec Donald Brydon chose a career in funds management over a life in the academe. Brydon had previously stayed with Edinburgh University, where he studied mathematics, to conduct research and to teach economics. In 1970, Brydon accepted an investment analysis position with the British Airways Pension Fund after deciding that he would not become a top academician. Brydon's ascension to a senior management position at Barclays, whose investment management business involves some 25 billion ounds sterling worldwide, has not diminished his attraction to numbers and the positive attributes of his inclination to academics.

Smith's position as an accountant at Arthur Young gave him experience in a wide variety of situations. Smith then entered the takeover industry, in which his experience and accurate financial projections helped him obtain financing for the acquisition of Gateway.
