Keep on trucking
Article Abstract:
Scania carried out a flotation in April 1996 when the company was launched on the stock exchange in New York and Stockholm, Sweden. The company saw a drop in earnings in Nov 1996 which was related to production problems with the 4-series truck. Scania has been focused on truck production, and its independence has been seen as a strength. The company has increased its market share but relies on good market conditions to achieve profits. Truck demand could fall in Europe, but the company is making progress in Latin America.

Chinks in a sustainable argument
Article Abstract:
Sweden will start to decommission its nuclear reactors in 1998. Sweden is the first nation to phase out its nuclear generating capacity prior to the end of its potential life. The government aims to use sustainable sources of fuel such as forestry waste, but development of these sources has been slow. Fossil fuel consumption is likely to increase over the short term. The cost of scrapping reactors is causing concern. Sweden is is nationalize power cables with links abroad in order to control the export of electricity.

Slow progress overseas
Article Abstract:
Swedish exporters face problems due to the high value of the Swedish krona which rose by 10% in 1996 due to low inflation and a drop in public debt levels. Export earnings were also hit by weak European demand in 1996. Steel, mining and forestry have been especially badly affected. Raw materials prices have also been weak. Companies in these industries have suffered a drop in profits. The krona has dropped in value since Dec 1996, and this may help exports in 1997.
