Kmart
Article Abstract:
Kmart has been affected by competition from Wal-Mart and has shut down stores and shed senior management. The company improved its results in 1996 but has been affected by poor sales growth. Sales in the Christmas 1996 holiday period have not been as bad as for some retailers but only increased after price reductions. The US retail market is affected by oversupply of retailers who are shutting down stores to deal with the problem. The dominance of Wal-Mart is a problem for the sector as a whole.

Marks's stores swoop
Article Abstract:
Marks and Spencer is likely to buy 19 stores from Littlewoods for 192.5 million pounds sterling following approval of the Moores family that controls Littlewoods. Marks and Spencer has been hampered by a lack of prime retail space and the purchase could increase the company's sales by as much as 500 million pounds sterling. The company may have paid more than the market value, but the stores are worth more to the company than to another purchaser.
