Know-how and asset complementarity and dynamic capability accumulation: the case of R&D
Article Abstract:
The influence of complementary technological knowledge and physical assets in dynamic capability accumulation in the US petroleum industry is examined. The study tests the hypotheses that larger amounts of coal gasification/liquefaction research and development (R&D) are likely to be undertaken by firms that had larger stocks of knowledge from past refining R&D, firms that had larger accumulated refinery assets, firms that had larger stocks of knowledge from past R&D on other synthetic fuels, and firm that had larger accumulated coal assets. Analysis of R&D data from 26 US energy firms between 1976 and 1981 indicates that firms with larger amounts of complementary technological knowledge assets invested more in R&D on coal conversion in response to increasing oil prices.
