Celgene stirs up maelstrom with PR for thalidomide

Celgene Corp of Warren, NJ, faces huge PR obstacles in marketing its thalidomide-based leprosy drug called Thalomid. Thalidomide is the infamous drug that caused thousands of birth defects during the 1950s and 1960s. Handling the PR job is Makovsky & Co, which has worked closely with the government, medical community and thalidomide victims to create a program designed to prevent another tragedy.

Food groups use 'Net to combat biotech hysteria

The Alliance for Better Foods, composed of food producers and marketers, is pushing for a 'fact-based' discussion on the importance of biotech foods. The coalition also offers a Web site, www.betterfoods.org, developed by BSMG's Washington DC office. The site highlights the improved yields from biotech crops as well as a future wherein a child can get a vaccine by eating a biotech banana.
