Leaving crisis behind
Article Abstract:
The economic recovery of the Asian and Latin American regions, which has been temporarily stalled by the increase in US long-term interest rates in mid-May 1999, is expected to continue. The Asian region, which is projected to outperform its Latin American counterpart, will continue to benefit from the ongoing restructuring of the region's banking institutions, better business management practices, an emerging business-friendly environment and a big external trade surplus that will mitigate any further effects of US interest-rate hikes or problems brought about by the Japanese or European economies. The Latin American region, which will be spared the prolonged recession that hit Asia, will benefit from the improvement in oil, metal and agricultural products prices.

Rumours of a recession are premature
Article Abstract:
Fears of a US recession in 1990, fueled by slower employment growth and reduced business optimism, are overstated. The rate of growth will probably fall in 1990, but a relaxed monetary policy, trade deficit reduction, and a projected revival in domestic demand in the second half of 1990 will forestall a potential recession. The Federal Reserve Board has shifted emphasis from forestalling inflation to preventing a damaging recession and, although the rate of growth will slow down, economic activity is probably likely to rise by mid-1990.
