Let's fix retention now
Article Abstract:
The Navy has not been quite successful in effectively addressing its problems with retaining highly trained sailors. A possible solution may lie in the way the Navy rewards its boatswain's mates. Young, third- or second-class boatswain's mates receive no selective re-enlisment bonuses (RSB) or extra schooling, yet these sailors stay in the Navy. Recognized as experts in deck seamanship by all after spending up to two years as deck seamen, these boatswain's mates enjoy a real sense of accomplishment. Therefore, the problem of retaining highly paid, well-schooled, rapidly promoted sailors with the highest RSB levels is that the Navy has not created the means by which these men can satisfy their esteem and self- actualization needs.

Can IT work for ASW?
Article Abstract:
The application of information technology (IT) in antisubmarine warfare (ASW) will result in the improvement of the detection capabilities of US forces. An increase in the ability of the nation's naval forces to detect hostile submarine forces will contribute to the reduction and management of the uncertainty factor. An IT system capable of providing dispersed ASW forces with a coherent picture of the enemy's positions will be of immense value in winning wars.
