Article Abstract:
Long-distance and local telephone service providers are gearing up for a possible head-to-head competition over telephone subscribers. Many long-distance carriers such as AT&T, Sprint Corp. and MCI Telecommunications Corp. have realized that success in the competition will depend heavily on their ability to capture large portions of the local market. Consequently, MCI Telecommunications intends to launch its MCI Metro unit specifically to attract local business in New York. The company has also forged strategic alliances with local service providers such as MFS Communications Inc. and Teleport Communications Group to increase its share of local service market.
