Looking to expand
Article Abstract:
Chieftain is a supplier of insulation and pipes, and plans to grow through acquisitions. The company performed well in 1997 but will not perform as well in 1998 due to an order gap. The company's customers are in the building, chemicals, power, steel and petroleum industries, and Chieftain aims to expand the range of services that it can offer them. Demand in mainland Europe is likely to be better than in the United Kingdom, with Norway and the Netherlands especially likely to produce orders.

Washing down the pipelines
Article Abstract:
British Fittings distributes equipment for pipelines and has improved its financial systems. The company reported a large loss for 1992 due to theft, bad debts and fraud. Cecil Buckett, a new financial director, has since reformed the company's finances. The company should benefit from a recovery for its high-pressure water products which have so far reported losses. A pre-tax profit of 3 million pounds sterling is forecast for British Fittings for 1995 by Granville Davis.

Polypipe
Article Abstract:
Polypipe is a UK producer of plastic pipes which performed well in 1995, despite a rise in the cost of raw materials. The company was also affected by weakness in demand for residential property in the UK, which meant that increased costs were not reflected in prices. The UK housing market is undergoing a recovery, and prices for raw materials are easing. The company's profit is forecast at 28 million pounds sterling for 1995 to 1996 by Panmure Gordon.
