Lots of smoke but not much fire
Article Abstract:
BAT Industries has been affected by legal problems relating to claims made by sufferers with conditions related to tobacco. The group's share price fell after a settlement was made by Liggett, a US tobacco firm. Some analysts sees concern about legal problems as exaggerated, and it is difficult to prove damage has been caused by tobacco. BAT is seeing a rise in volume sales in the Far East. The group's financial services division has also seen a rise in profit.

BAT Industries
Article Abstract:
BAT Industries is involved in financial services and tobacco products, and plans to hive off the financial services companies which are to be merged with Zurich. The remaining business will be called British American Tobacco, and could close down its US operation if tobacco litigation becomes a serious problem in the US. British American Tobacco is likely to be a good cash generator, and concerns about litigation could offer opportunities for extracting value.

Tobacco's extra
Article Abstract:
BAT Industries is involved in tobacco and financial services. The cigarette subsidiary, Brown and Williamson, is seeking to avoid paying a large sum in compensation but the strength of BAT's financial services business should be enough to offset the impact of tobacco compensation claims. There has been speculation of a separation between the financial services and tobacco activities, and a partner may be taken on by the financial services division.
