Lover of the law numbers
Article Abstract:
St. Mary's University Asst. accounting professor Mark Nigrini says he has developed a formula that will catch tax evaders and swindlers by using the mathematical equation developed by physicist Frank A. Benford. Called 'Benford's Law,' the formula predicts expected frequencies of digits occuring in a list of numbers. Cheats can easily be identified because the frequency of digits in their tax returns will not match the Benford predictions. He has tested the formula on Bill Clinton's tax returns and discovered claims that Clinton has been honestly paying his taxes in the last 13 years.

Displaying 800 Numbers for Best Results
Article Abstract:
Display of an 800 number can determine the success of a direct response telemarketing program. Consumers like to use such numbers; however, size and position of the number in the advertisement are important. By displaying the 800 number prominently, the marketer is giving the consumer a reason to respond. In television advertising, often the number is not displayed long enough for the customer to respond. The number should be displayed at least 15-17 seconds. Business hours for an 800 number must also clearly be stated.

Governing by numbers: figuring out democracy
Article Abstract:
This essay discusses the links between numbers and politics. It proposes that numbers have become a necessary tool in bridging the gap between the exercise of government and its entities, such as civil society, independent power sources, and individual wills, upon which democracy depends. Political practices in the 18th and 19th centuries are also examined to demonstrate how statistical knowledge and census contributed in bringing about a democratic nation.
