Lower view of Courts
Article Abstract:
Courtaulds has been affected by rising raw material costs and weakening demand. The company has seen a drop in its share price following specualtion over a profit warning. Stockbrokers vary in their enthusiasm for the company's shares. Hoare Govett rates the shares a long-term buy with a rise in demand likely after poor US and Chinese cotton harvests. Societe Generale Strauss Turnbull ranks the shares as hold or sell, and sees problems from rising raw materials costs which have not been wholly reflected in prices to Courtaulds' customers.

Covering itself in glory, quietly
Article Abstract:
The James Halstead Group is a Manchester textile concern which also ranks first in the UK market for PVC floor coverings. The company reported a rise in profit of 13.7% to 9.9 million pounds sterling for 1994 and a further rise to over 10 million pounds is forecast for 1995. The company has also boosted exports of floor coverings since the UK market is mature. Raw materials costs have risen and this has eroded some gains from efficiency increases since price rises cannot be passed on staright away.
