MAGIC purchase makes Advanstar a top 10 show manager
Article Abstract:
Advanstar Communications' acquisition of MAGIC International, the largest apparel show in the world, brings it to the list of the top 10 trade show management firms in the country. The deal, which was clinched in Apr 1998, is touted to be the biggest since the 1995 purchase of Comdex by Softbank Corp. It is Advanstar's seventh acquisition or joint venture in 1998, following its agreement in May 1998 to buy Scan-Tech, an automated data capture trade show and related publications from Reed Exhibition Cos. Advanstar has 100 shows and conferences and about 100 publications.

Show motion
Article Abstract:
Trade show organizers are trying to expand the horizons of trade shows and at the same time reduce the costs associated with putting up a show. The trade show industry is doing this through the acquisition of other trade shows, colocation and merging or co-sponsoring shows. Acquisition of trade shows is a growth strategy for many firms. Colocation, on the other hand, combines at least two shows in a single event which increases the attendance rate through crossover attendance between shows and save attendees time and effort.

Consolidation opens opportunities
Article Abstract:
Consolidation has become a common occurrence in the trade show business. Companies find purchasing of existing shows an attractive idea because it enables them to access new markets and therefore to expand their growth potential. The latest acquisition frenzy began with the 1995 purchase of Interface Group's trade show group by Comdex Softbank. Another notable acquisition was the Blenheim Exhibitions buyout by Miller Freeman. Through acquisition, trade show companies are able to improve their market positions.
