Making light of complex equations
Article Abstract:
TK! Solver from Universal Technical Systems of Illinois is an innovative "tool kit" software product designed for use by scientists and financial analysts who must work through interlocking systems of equations. TK! Solver runs on IBM-PCs and clones thereof, and version 1.6 (TK! Solver's latest release) sells for 250 pounds sterling. TK! Solver is rated as more appropriate than spreadsheet software when working with lengthy formulas or mathematical calculations, such as pension trust accounting calculations. TK! Solver is also praised for its ability to: "manipulate algebra"; automatically convert mathematical units to fit equations being used; formulate 'if, then' rules easily; and adapt to various uses, with its specialized packages for financial management, mechanical engineering, building and construction, and introductory science applications.

Down-to-earth problems with an ACT star
Article Abstract:
Pulsar accounting software from ACT of Great Britain is being marketed as seven packages available for various computers from Apricot, Sirius and IBM, and the computer program sells for 195 pounds sterling. The operations of Pulsar are described, keystroke by keystroke, and its capabilities with regard to maintaining purchasing, sales and nominal ledgers are praised. The only drawback to the Pulsar software system is its failure to maintain day books, which makes assessments of value added tax difficult. Moreover, the reviewer believes the reports prepared by the system could be improved as far as their final presentation appearance.
