Making money from the mining funds
Article Abstract:
Mining funds have not performed well in the three years to Mar 1997, but this could change. Some funds, such as Mercury World Mining have performed well over the short term, and mining companies have also seen an improvement in metal prices. Base metal prices could rise further, though gold prices are seen as less likely to rise in a sustained fashion. Mining company shares may still be expensive, and investors should wait until they are cheaper before considering the funds that invest in them.

Article Abstract:
Mercury Asset Management is a UK fund manager which has benefited from an increase in popularity for the larger managers. Management of UK pension funds accounts for some 67% of the company's sales. Funds under management have risen by 12% to 70.9 billion pounds sterling. The company has a high level of exposure to British securities and this could bring problems due to slower economic growth. The company has also been reluctant to make agreements with distribution partners abroad.
