Making the case for SSGNs
Article Abstract:
The first four Ohio (SSBN-726)-class submarines which are due for decommissioning in 2002 can be converted into Special Operations Forces/offensive strike platforms as guided-missile submarines by transforming their ballistic missile tubes into conventional weapons launchers. This proposal is presented to address the problem of rising defense costs which are measured in billions of dollars. The Ohio-class ships are considered comparatibly young and can used for another 20 years in conventional and special mission exercises.

A hostile sub is a joint problem
Article Abstract:
Submarines and their attendant capabilities will present a recurring problem to worldwide US interests. Submarines, despite using only 1.6% of the US Navy's manpower during World War II, were responsible for sinking 54% of Japan's maritime forces. The US, realizing the potential danger in all submarine forces, must continue its vigilance through continuous participations in joint naval exercises with foreign submarine fleets.

How many subs do we need?
Article Abstract:
The US Navy downsized too quickly and now faces a shortfall in required numbers of submarines, with projections calling for a minimum of 50 to 68 submarines to cover national security requirements. In order to meet this goal the new SSN-21 class will need at least twice as many submarines as are currently on order.
