Man management? Women and the use of debt to control personal relationships
Article Abstract:
Interviews with 50 people who are addicted to shopping have revealed that some compulsive shoppers do not overspend simply because it makes them feel better about themselves but deliberately do so as a means of getting an element of control over their lives. Compulsive spending is also a way of getting revenge on a partner for nine of the 50 informants. Marketing strategies are likely to be unimportant to these consumers because their behaviour is profoundly influenced by their personal relationships. Extracts from the research interviews are included.
