Manufacturing as engine of growth and industrialisation in Malaysia
Article Abstract:
Manufacturing plays a crucial role in fueling its own growth and that of other sectors. In Malaysia, however, foreign direct investments and multinational corporations promote export-oriented manufacturing activities that tap other sectors of the economy as supplier of cheap resources for manufacturing, without contributing to the productivity or development of these sectors. These foreign companies focus on export processing and assembly through the use of imported inputs, instead of the local manufacturing industry serving as the provider of goods for the domestic economy.
