Merseyside wish is granted

QVC is investing 14 million pounds sterling in setting up a customer operation in Merseyside, England. The project includes a 125,000 sq ft warehouse and the company has planning consent for an additional warehouse. The company took a number of factors into account when deciding on the location. These factors include grants available, start-up costs, and trucking times. Grants are not the main incentive, according to the engineering and operations director. Richard Burrell.

Merseyside: winning the confidence of investors

Merseyside, England, is seeking to attract investment and the Mersey Partnership has been launched to promote the area. Sony will locate Sony Electronic Publishing in Wavertree technology park bringing 250 jobs and international recognition. Merseyside Development Corp will be wound up in Mar 1998 and has reclaimed more than 400 hectares in addition to creating commercial, industrial and residential property. The area has also attracted funds from the European Social Fund.

Manufacturing industry is important in the cities of Leeds and Bradford, England. Leeds has a total gross domestic product of some 6.5 billion pounds sterling and manufacturing accounts for some 4.2 billion pounds of this. The cities do not attract European Union incentives and grants, which can be a problem. They do benefit from entrepreneurial strengths and innovation. The private sector and local government are promoting the cities as key manufacturing centers.
