Metamorphosis, but into what?
Article Abstract:
UK investors seeking a high-yield portfolio have to adapt to changes in the nature of high-yield shares. One selection method is to discard shares that reduce their dividends but yields may rise prior to a dividend cut since the share price may have dropped in anticipation of the cut. Utilities face particular problems related to political risk since their dividends could be reduced by the regulators, and windfall taxes could be imposed. Investors should also bear in mind that total returns include capital appreciation, and high-yield stocks may not perform well in terms of capital growth.

Dipping a toe into equities: increasingly complex Tessas are coming onto the market, offering investors, among other options, controlled exposure to the stock markets
Article Abstract:
More complex tax exempt special savings accounts (Tessas) have been introduced aimed at more sophisticated savers. These include Guaranteed Tessas, Equity-linked Tessas and Growth Tessas. Abbey National's Guaranteed Growth Tessa offers a minimum 40% return after five years and pays an added bonus. Stock market Tessas link returns to equities and are aimed at investors whose first Tessa has matured. However savers may be affected by lock-in clauses and transfer penalties.
