Kinko's tries to copy campus success with business clients

Kinko's is going beyond its consumer market by actively targeting the business market. Renowned for its consumer services, it is shelling out about $20 million on a television and print campaign to further expand its business-to-business revenue. As of 1996, over 200,000 businesses employ Kinko's services per day in 850 locations around the world for their document requirements. The marketing push targets not only Fortune 1,000 companies but also organizations with more 50 employees.

One of the most effective approaches to determining the needs of customers is benchmarking. For benchmarking to be successful, however, companies must gauge their performance against both competitors and non-competitors which are considered the best in their product classes. The most difficult step in benchmarking is identifying which areas to focus on and prioritize in terms of changes.
