Moderation goes out of fashion
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom financial markets were affected by a number of developments in 1997. Building societies and mutual insurers paid bonuses as they shed their mutual status, leading to investors seeking to secure more bonuses from those mutuals that were left. Order-driven trading was introduced in the stock market, and private investors benefited from the greater availability of information from the internet. Taxpayers had to cope with self-assessment, a new system launched in 1997.
