Morbid market raises regulatory fears
Article Abstract:
Life insurance policies may be sold by the terminally ill as a way of raising funds. There are four UK companies auctioning or buying policies from people with under two years to live. Investors gain from the early death of the policyholder, and access to confidential medical information can create regulatory problems. Dubious practices in the US include withholding payment to the terminally ill through slow processing. There are also pressures to persuade sick people to sell policies for low sums.
