Multi-tier financial intermediation systems in formerly centrally planned economies
Article Abstract:
Article discusses considerations for the construction of multi-tier financial intermediation systems in centrally planned countries. Constraints including bad loan overhang, limited financial and skilled resources and primitive accounting and auditing practices must be taken into account. The intermediation system must be able to provide a guarantee to deposits that avoids pitfalls of deposit insurance funds and which operates with the minimum amount of equity capital. Proposal for the three tiers include payment services, loan activities and investments.

Economies of scale and scope in the Finnish non-life insurance industry
Article Abstract:
Diseconomies of scale exist at the company level and constant returns to scale at the branch level exist in the non-life insurance industry of Finland. The study was carried out using a theory that stipulates that an industry can possess both decreasing returns to scale at the firm level and increasing returns to scale at the outlet level. Evidence of the cost effect were provided by the estimation of the cost function, while the captivation effect was equivalent to big companies that wield power in the market via their network of outlets.
