Multibank Holding Companies: Recent Evidence on Competition and Performance in Banking Markets
Article Abstract:
In a review of the recent literature of the effect of multibank holding companies on banking markets, a number of studies have focused upon the elements of structure- conduct-performance within banking markets. In general the emphasis has been placed upon the impact on expansion that the operation of multibank holding companies exerts within these markets. Various studies have shown divergent results in these areas. Two recent studies focused instead upon the impact of geographically diversified banking firms on localized markets, with particular emphasis upon the impediment to de novo entry into these local markets. The findings in these studies indicate that there is little impact to entry but that interfirm rivalry may suffer some deterioration. Further studies need to be conducted in order to verify the validity of these results.

EXPRESSEND: A Check Clearing Decision Support System for Endpoint Selection
Article Abstract:
Timely check clearing is one of the most complex problems traditionally facing banks. Certain external factors such as the high cost of funds and the Monetary Control Act of 1980 have now made funds availability a crucial factor and consequently check clearing needs to be reviewed for maximum efficiency. A computerized decision support system is presented as the best means of handling the tremendous number of variables present in any analysis of timely check clearing. This model provides decision support through the selection of appropriate end points. The program is user friendly, generates concise readable information, and provides an implementation vehicle. Charts and tables are included.

Branch Banking and the State/National Charter Decision
Article Abstract:
Reserve requirements are no longer a major decision in a bank's state or national charter decision. Examination of the position of national and state banking authorities was done. Determining if national authorities are more liberal regarding branches requires comparing deposit sizes and branch office averages. Results suggest no difference as long as branching is limited to a local market. National bank authorities seem to be more liberal relative to states with statewide branching.
