National Express: monopoly worry
Article Abstract:
The UK government is concerned about the monopolistic power of National Express. The Trade and Industry secretary plans to refer the acquisition of Midland Main Line to the UK competition body, the Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC) if National Express does not withdraw from some bus line activities. National Express bids may not be recommended in further rail franchise sales due to concern that other bids could be referred. The UK Labor party plans to prohibit the ownership of railroad routes in locations where companies operate bus lines.

Railroading the opposition
Article Abstract:
UK airlines, bus lines and railroads have been privatized and new private sector monopolies are being created. Six companies account for three quarters of the UK bus transportation industry and competition between large bus lines has been avoided, while large bus lines have often driven smaller firms out of business. Bus companies are moving into railroad trasnportation which allows them to expand without clashes between large firms. Critics argue that regulation of transportation in the UK has been too lax.

Storm on the tracks hits regulator
Article Abstract:
John Swift is regulator for the UK railroad system, and has proposed limited the number of railroad stations which had to issue tickets to anywhere else on the system. This proposal was opposed by the UK transport secretary. Swift has examined other aspects of the railroad system such as Railtrack's supposed asset valued in addition to its subsidies. Swift has a reputation for being independent and a pragmatist. He reserves his right to review the proposal over stations issuing tickets after 1996.
