Highlights of recent developments in financial markets

Developments in the financial markets towards the end of 1999 are presented. These include the effects of the year 2000 problem exacerbating end-of-the-year apprehensions, bond markets and stock market evaluation in the US; the strong yen, resumption of foreign investment, government bond issues, and banks plan to resume bond issuance in Japan; the relatively weak euro which had no negative effect on bond issuance and increase in merger activity in Europe; mergers and acquisitions in the financial sector; emerging markets; and uncertainty in Korea.

An assessment of the financial markets in the US, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, the UK, Canada, Switzerland, Australia and other countries including Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden covering the first four months of 1995 is presented. The US exhibited an uptrend in its domestic market rates during the period, while Japan posted a downturn. Germany, France, Italy, the UK, and Canada showed divergent trends.

The financial markets of the US, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, the UK, Canada and Switzerland are examined with particular focus on national economies and structural developments. Statistics on domestic market rates, gross public bond offerings, stock price indexes, exchange rates and growth in monetary aggregates are provided for many of the countries examined.
