New Labour, Pep danger
Article Abstract:
The tax status of United kingdom personal equitiy plans (Peps) may change with the planned introduction of individual savings accounts in 1999. Details of these new accounts will not be released until 1998, which means that investors are unsure of the implications of investing in a Pep. Peps are popular, and tax benefits tend not to be canceled retrospectively, so Pep managers are optimistic. There could still be problems for investors using Peps for long-term projects, such as repaying a mortgage, should Peps cease to be available.

Banishing broker funds for all time
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom broker funds may cease to exist if the Personal Investment Authority (PIA) brings in new rules. The rules are likely to mean that broker funds will have to perform better than any other investment if they are to be recommended to clients. The PIA is concerned about advisers claiming to be independent and selling their own products, and they see most broker funds as performing poorly. This is partly due to the high charges involved.
