Hollas labours in vain
Article Abstract:
Hollas is a UK clothing producer which has been affected by problems in the industry in the UK. The company supplies large UK retailers, and also make specialist clothing through JB Hunter, acquired in 1994 for 3.5 million pounds sterling. Sluggish UK retail sales have hit the company, and spare capacity is often a problem when demand is low. The company has sold its stake in Hawkshead, a mail order firm which has not performed well. William Baird's stitch in time
Article Abstract:
William Baird is a clothing manufacturer which was hit by weak demand and rising costs in 1995, like the sector as a whole in the UK. The company announced a restructuring plan in Nov 1995 and the benefits of lower costs should be reaped. David Suddens was appointed chief executive in May 1996 and plans a review to be announced in Oct 1996. Aggressive changes are likely and these could include a focus on core activities and better product design.
