New seeds of doubt
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom stock market saw a drop in prices on Aug 15 1997 which emphasised the impact that Wall Street has on the UK stock exchange. There are differences between 1997, when companies are buying back stocks, and 1987, when companies were issuing stocks and the market crashed. Optimists also argue that UK interest rates are near their peak. Pessimists see inflationary pressures from consumer demand. The UK could be undergoing similar changes to the US, where unemployment and wage pressures are both low, but US investors are also wary of a possible correction.

Stepping out of Wall Street's shadow
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom stock exchange has not performed as well as Wall Street, measured in terms of the FTSE All-Share index and the S and P 500 since 1994. Both the US and UK economies have seen an increase in productive efficiency allowing for increased output and profit with no inflation. The US has a balance of trade deficit while the UK reported a surplus in 1997. Inflation and rises in interest rates also appear to be more of a risk in the US than in the UK. UK stock prices could, then, perform better than those of the US, though they may simply fall less sharply.

Challenges for sector selectors
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom stock prices rose in early 1997, but fell in fall 1997 following problems in Asian markets. Stock prices were previously seen to beovervalued and a correction helps bring their prices to levels that can be more easily sustained. Some analysts are concerned that inflationary pressure could build up in the United Kingdom. Regular investments of small sums may be more appropriate in an unstable market than a single, lump sum investment.
