New venture, old danger
Article Abstract:
UK venture capital trusts (VCTs) offer substantial tax advantages but they also involve high risk levels and have to comply with complex rules. Tax advantages include capital gains tax deferment, immediate income tax relief and investments are free of income and capital gains tax if they are held for five years. VCT status can be lost if the rules are not complied with. Investors may find that venture capital investment trusts are better suited to their needs. They have fewer tax advantages but are less constrained by regulations.

A capital venture for the brave
Article Abstract:
UK venture capital trusts (VCTs) offer a numberof tax advantages and invest in smaller firms that are not quoted on the stock market. This type of investment involves high risks and three funds are seeking to reduce the risk by investing much of their assets in loans with bank guarantees. This security does mean that potential returns are limited, and investors may be better advised to choose unit trusts. Trusts likely to perform well are those where managers have experience of venture capital as well as investment trusts.

Cash in on the skills of the venture capitalists
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom venture capital trusts can give good returns for investors if they select successful projects to support. Latchway has proved a successful investment for Dunedin Enterprise, while Micromass has proved a good choice for Schroder Ventures International. Investors can reduce the risks of investing in small firms by using an investment trust. The four largest in the UK are Candover, Schroder Ventures, Electra and 3i. Problems include possible overcrowding of the sectors and lack of information.
