Non-probability sampling for WWW surveys: a comparison of methods

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to compare various non-probability sampling techniques used in World Wide Web (WWW)-user-surveys. The practical response patterns of the recruitment techniques were analyzed and compared against response completeness and response distributions. Results indicated that a number of factors affect the validity of the results of WWW surveys. These factors correlate with the availability of a population's central register, non-response bias and members' response to such surveys.

Sampling errors in practice

Article Abstract:

Knowledge about sampling errors in market research remains limited due to the emphasis on non-sampling errors, other uncertainties in the survey process and difficulties in calculating sampling errors. Two methods are presented for estimating sampling errors based on the division of the original sample into a series of sub-samples, and the use of the range of sub-sample means to compute the standard error of the mean of the original sample.

Non-probability sampling for WWW surveys: a comparison of methods

Article Abstract:

The effectiveness of non-probability sampling methods used in World Wide Web surveys are studied. Results show that non-probability sampling methods are cost-effective and generate high response speeds from newsgroups and electronic mailings. These methods also provide researchers with information on Web users' attitudes about the Web. However, non-probability sampling methods are not suitable for determining Web user demographics.
